FGM is illegal in The Gambia, but without enforcement, the law is just words on paper. Girls continue to be cut, babies continue to die, and families are left with lifelong scars.

This is not culture. This is not tradition. This is violence. And when the law is ignored, the violence continues.

Ending FGM requires more than legislation, It demands accountability, education, and real action on the ground. Survivors’ voices must be heard, communities must be engaged, and leaders must ensure that laws meant to protect girls are enforced.

Every Gambian girl deserves to grow up safe, healthy, and free. Until the law is upheld, too many will remain at risk.

This #menstrualhygieneday, we spotlight our outreach in Challa Village, North Bank Region, where 15 girls gathered to learn, share, and reclaim the narrative around their periods.

This year, we did more than distribute, we taught. As part of our growing Self Love Kits project (now reaching over 500 girls), the girls not only received menstrual and self-care items, but also learned how to make reusable pads themselves.

Because true empowerment means giving girls the skills, not just the supplies. 💪🏾💖

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a deeply entrenched practice that violates the rights and well-being of girls and women worldwide. Globally, over 230 million girls and women have undergone FGM, with Africa accounting for the largest share of this total, with over 144 million.

In The Gambia, the prevalence of FGM among women aged 15–49 is alarmingly high, with 75.7% having undergone the procedure. Notably, 44% of women in this age group believe the practice should continue.

Despite a 2015 ban on FGM in The Gambia, recent attempts to repeal this legislation have been thwarted, reflecting ongoing cultural and religious debates surrounding the practice.

FGM has no health benefits and can lead to severe complications, including excessive bleeding, infections, and increased risks during childbirth.

It’s imperative to recognize that no tradition or culture should inflict harm upon girls. Collective efforts are essential to eradicate FGM and protect the rights and health of all girls and women.
